Collecting Art

Collecting Art

For those new to collecting art or an ardent investor, here are some things to consider when collecting...

Limited Editions:

The lower the number the more collectable. This idea stems from hands on forms of printing like Lithograph and Silk Screening where the artist has a hand in the original block or screen. So the first print is said to be the closest to the artists own hand, and every print after is once more removed. With the establishment of Digital printing, such as Lambda and Giclee where each print taken from the same digital file that is taken from the original, this idea becomes redundant, however even in these forms of printing number 1, is still the most desirable

Matching Edition numbers:

If you are looking to buy more than one piece of artwork from the same artist it is good to try to match the edition numbers

Artists Prints:

Look out for these as they are very collectable and will be worth more than prints from limited edition runs. This is because the print is actually made by the artist and is considered an original work itself. Artist’s Prints are likely to be bought directly from artists and artist collectives.

Choose art that you like:

It may sound obvious but try not to go for artwork or an artist just because it is in fashion, or just because you have heard it will double in price in the next six months (occasionally this does happen and our Art Finders service can offer you tips on this) as most art will appreciate in value over time anyway, so pick something that you want to see on your wall everyday.
